Koninginnedag: Queen’s day
‘Queen’s day, or Koninginnedag as we call it, is a national holiday in the Netherlands. On this day we celebrate the birthday of the Queen of the Netherlands. Although it’s original the birthday of Queen Juliana (the mother of Queen Beatrix), not of Queen Beatrix, we celebrate her birthday on 30 April. Our Queen Beatrix birthday is really on the 31th January, but the winter isn’t the time to party outside. Because of this Queen Beatrix officially celebrates her birthday on 30 April, so we can party with (hopefully) better weather! Isn’t our Queen lovely?”
Today’s celebrations are festooned with orange-everything. Today is also the ONLY day that people can sell used items vis-à-vis a garage sale. At no other time during the year are garage sales allowed. Although there is an excellent website that people use (us included) called marktplaats.nl which is akin to kijiji, craigslist, etc.
We ordered my KitchenAid food processor today!!! I’m already scouring through my electronically saved recipes for all the things I want to make. Hummus being my favourite dip to gorge myself on is what I dream of the most; however, as mentioned in previous posts tahini is very hard to find in stores in the Netherlands or Germany. But I have found one I shall try, as I can not live without my hummus. And I really mean MY hummus, as I’m pretty sure mine is the best and prefer not to eat store-bought hummus.
