Sofie finds another backyard beastie

Today, it was a frog!!
I’ve never seen one in our backyard and M says he’s never seen one either.
I had him in my hands for awhile, but I was concerned that i might be freaking him out, so I let him go. He was too hoppy to get a photo of him in my hands, but here he is on a chair. He even made froggy noises, which made me gush. I hope to see him again some day…Frog day afternoon

Pokey. I helped a hedgehog today.

He was having a bad day. He got stuck between the wires of our backyard fence. I think he must have been there for awhile because there were lots of struggle-claw-marks in the ground. Sofie knew he was in trouble and barked a few times to get me to pay attention. When I got there, Sofie calmly stood there and looked between me and the hedgehog. She may have shrugged her shoulders. (she also may not have)

Well, we have to do something, I said.

I got the bolt cutters…only thing I could find in a hurry. Bent a wire back on the fence and the little guy shimmied back and rolled into a little, spiky ball. Awwwww

I checked him out and he didn’t have any fence or dog damage. Phew. I held on to him for awhile because I just wanted to. Then he slowly started to unfurl (but not completely). I took him out of the yard and found him a nice safe space in the vacant yard beside us—in a great little natural den made of blackberry branches. He was once again safe.

Hedgehogs are very patient…I kept checking on him and he was still in ball-form just waiting it out. Then, on one of my hedgehog checks, he had scampered away. Yay!

Here are a few little videos of him.

Sofie in the fresh snow!

We had so much fun in the snow today!

Some Rudy, Lois and Sofie!

Here’s all my beautiful creatures…

huisdierenverzekering

This is the Dutch word for pet insurance.

It makes sense now that I know more Dutch words, but it’s still a mouthful. Sheesh!

I’m pretty sure it’s time for some more photos of Sofie…

More Sofie!

Cat-saving

Earlier today Lois was climbing trees as usual, so I went out to film her. And potentially catch her (as I always think I’m going to have to do, but she always catches herself and never falls. I hear cats are like that.)

Lois loves climbing trees. I’m not as nervous watching her as I used to be. But this time, she was jumping to different trees, checking out her weight on branches and she even manages to flip herself upside down!

Lois likes to jump onto M’s shoulder (and sit there or lie there), so M sometimes climbs part way up the tree to meet her and I finally got that filmed too! Super cute. (video)

LATER…

A neighbour comes to the door and says our cat is way up a big tree and she can’t get down. What?! She was with me just two seconds ago. So, M goes out to the neighbours who have planted a super, long ladder up a huge oak tree. Lois and Rudy were in the house. Phew! I ran out with my camera and a blankie if we had to fireman-catch her…but M was already heading up the ladder.

He grabbed the kitten and put her on his shoulders and carried on back down the ladder. Cat jumps down before he reaches the bottom, looks a bit bewildered, didn’t come to us when we made kissy noises and moseyed on down the road. She was up SO high! But M saved the day. : )

Our second walk today!

The area the animal shelter is in is quite pretty. There’s a huge lake that we visited today where puppy sort of met  some geese (video). She also met two nice ladies walking their two nice dogs. Super easy encounter with the dogs.

The only time she has barked was at a post with a bag on it in a field (I almost barked at it too), the geese at the lake and at naughty dogs we meet along the pathways. If the other dogs are behaving and they pass by without barking, she doesn’t bark.

She impresses me.

Walkies and a whole new kind of love

Me: I think I love her already.

M: I know you do.

So, walkies was super fun! She behaved incredibly well on the lead and listened to me! She is even more adorable than the first time we met. She will be a very easy puppy to train.

We can go for another walk with her tomorrow, then on Monday the vet checks her out…then, Tuesday she can come home with us!!!!!
